Logical Intelligence: Did You Know That Numbers Are Brain Food?

Logical Intelligence: Did You Know That Numbers Are Brain Food?

Howard Gardner, in 1983, gave strength to the current that defended that we cannot speak of a single intelligence, but of several  – specifically he identified 8 – and affirmed that, in no way, these different intelligences are reducible to a single global intelligence.

Thus, his book  Multiple Intelligences  and his ideas continue today to be a reference in the study of intelligence and classification.

So far we’ve heard about physical, social and emotional intelligence, but in this article we’ll talk about logical intelligence.

What is logical-mathematical intelligence?

Logical-mathematical intelligence is the one that helps us to relate concepts in a schematic and technical way. Through it we reason and use logical thinking. According to Howard Gardner’s qualification, this is a type of formal intelligence that usually manifests itself when working with abstract concepts or arguments of complex construction. It can be said that this type of intelligence is what prevails in mathematicians, scientists and philosophers.

This intelligence seems to be found mainly in the left hemisphere, considered the hemisphere of logic. It sets itself in motion when our brains cross-relate data and process it to get a result, or a combination of results. It can be said that this is the only intelligence that can only be exercised by “installing programs”. In other words, it is only possible to improve logical intelligence by practicing and analyzing existing cases or combining data to approach problem solving through a trial-error.  It can be said that she is an “interim boss” of the other intelligences. Not in vain, it  provides method, order and meaning to our actions and/or decisions.

Exercise logical intelligence

It’s not as simple or as fun to exercise this kind of intelligence as may be the case with some others. To strengthen logical intelligence we need to “feed” our brain, processing data and facing questions that make it work. We can do this with the following activities, for example:

1. Solve automatic problems or sudokus so that your left brain activates and connects to that area of intelligence.

2. Ask yourself questions about things that require  mental effort. Read about things that are hard to understand and try to digest them.

3. Reflect on things and reason. Look for unexplained events and start looking for a logical explanation for them.

4. Make plans and lay them out. Write down its temporal sequence, its possible variations, etc.

5. Make lists! The left brain and logic love lists. Ask yourself questions and make lists of all possible answers, analyzing as many points of view as possible.

If you are able to feed your logical intelligence daily with any of these simple exercises, you will find that you will start to think faster, that your decision-making capacity will increase, and finally that you will be able to plan innately and almost without having any work. What do you say? We will try? Let us start planning and exercising our brains!
