Carl Jung is responsible for introducing astrology into psychoanalysis. This Swiss psychoanalyst, a disciple of Freud, approached concepts that for many people were closer to magic than to science. Even so, their postulates are deep and interesting, and they managed to surpass themselves to the point of creating an approach to psychology that remains in force to this day.
For Jung, astrology contains all the knowledge of psychology from the Ancient Ages. Intuitively, the twelve signs of the zodiac became a summary of psychic realities. They configure what Jung called “archetypes”. They are psychological patterns or models that live in the collective unconscious.
Carl Jung was convinced that there was a natural disposition in every human being to be what he is. It is not learned, but it is born in each one of us. At this point we can see the influence of astrology on Jungian psychoanalysis. Astrologers are convinced that there is an ability to live a certain way from the moment of birth.
Synchronicity, or astrology in Jung’s psychoanalysis
Jung developed the concept of “synchronicity” in his theory. It is a postulate that considers the presence of astrology in psychoanalysis. Synchronicity refers to events that generate a coincidence. They meet, occur at the same time, but apparently they are disconnected from each other. For example, when someone is thinking about something unusual like a bat and an hour later sees one in the window.
For Jung, these coincidences follow invisible threads that connect all things. This agrees with astrological principles. According to this knowledge, there are invisible forces flowing in the universe. These forces are constantly combining and causing events to happen in a person’s life.
In this way, the influence of astrology on Jungian psychoanalysis is evident. An unknown universal order manifests itself in a specific situation. The movements of the universe give rise to definitive events in a person’s life. This may seem to depart from the scientific perspective, but quantum physics also deals with very similar postulates.
Jung calls astrology the “intuitive method”. He stated on several occasions that he had verified that certain psychological states or certain facts were related to the transit of planets. “Especially, the afflictions of Saturn to Uranus” , he declared in 1954, during an interview.
Astrologers and Jung
Astrologers, on the other hand, agree on many points with Jung. They insist on the existence of invisible forces that establish a certain meaning to everything that happens. “The force that moves the sun and the stars is the same force that moves the human soul” , said the famous Spanish astrologer Lluís Gilbert.
Just as an influence of astrology on psychoanalysis is appreciated, the opposite is also true. Many astrologers rely on Jung’s concepts to elaborate their interpretations. A very particular case is that of Richard Tarnas. This scholar has a very special training: he is a philosopher graduated from Harvard University, but also a psychologist and astrologer.
He says that he came to astrology after learning about Jung’s teachings. His initial approach was especially empirical. He was surprised to find that the astral charts of Galileo, Einstein and Darwin were very similar, and also that the same planetary configuration was repeated during a Beethoven concert and Jimi Hendrix’s most apotheotic show. One sentence sums up his posture: “Your psyche is the breath of the cosmos”.
an uncomfortable relationship
The influence of astrology on psychoanalysis is questioned by almost all psychoanalysts. They see in this influence only a refuge from imaginary myths and legends that have no validity. In fact, classical psychoanalysis is based on the idea that human beings are the master of their destiny and that casualties do not exist.
The minority contrary to this opinion questions the extremism of the Cartesian reasoning that imposed itself on knowledge. They indicate that there are not one but many ways to get to the truth. And rational, scientific truth is just one of them.
Despite everything, astrology in psychoanalysis is still very present, at least in the Jungian approach. Both adherents of this approach and astrologers feel increasingly close to quantum physics. They ensure that, little by little, new knowledge will be unveiled, which challenges rational laws. We’ll see if that happens…
